After a scenic start with the East Point Lighthouse directly behind you, runners will begin Leg#1 on the Lighthouse Road. At the 1.5 km mark Diligent Pond will come into view to the left and on a clear day, across the water you will be able to see Cheticamp Cape Breton, NS. To your right you will be able to see the see the North Lake Windmills peeking over the tree line. At almost the 2km mark you will take a left onto the East Point Road on Route16. At the 4km mark on your left is the Newman Estate Winery. Continue another 3 kms where you will turn right at the intersection of South Lake Christian Church and Eastern Kings Fire Department (Elmira Road 16A).
From Elmira Road, you will turn right onto Route 16. On your left, you will enjoy the fantastic views of South Lake Dunes. Be prepared for some hilly terrain on this the longest of the 4 legs. About 3kms into this leg, you will pass Elliott’s General Store, and next to the store is the Mossey’s Road famous for its scenic beach. You will soon see Basin Head Beach and Museum on your left. You will take a left on Basin Head Road at the 7km mark and continue into the parking lot in front of the Basin Head Fisheries Museum.
From the Basin Head parking lot, you head back out the Basin Head Road and take a left at the end of Basin Head Road onto Route 16. At about the 3km mark, you will come to Red Point Provincial Park. From here there is a downhill into Black Pond by Peter Ching’s and Chapman Brothers.
The last leg, aka the glory leg, begins with a tough uphill climb. The views of Little Harbour on your left should help with some of the discomforts. Continuing into Souris, runners will turn left on MacPhee Ave and head for the lighthouse where you will finish on yet another uphill climb.
